Powdered and Dressed

A crowd has gathered up
All powdered and dressed
They await the spectacle
Not ten steps away

Champagne glasses glittering
They smile their ivory smiles
And dance with a sense of irony
As if they know the joke

But still the children skitter
Leaping over a train left trailing
Laughing along with the dancers
But the punchline leads only to glass

This comedy is a classical kind
Only hoping for a less tragic ending
And the joke's left well on them
Off to collect its pay
